Manual plants grinders are a dime a dozen. Some of them are pretty crappy, some of them are nearly perfect, and all of them require you to physically move your wrists and hands in a twisting fashion to activate the blades. Human error worms its way into the process. And for some, that dexterity just isn’t possible. The electric plantsgrinder category is more niche, and it isn’t exactly abounding with options (unless you want to sacrifice your coffee grinder or actual herb grinder to the cause, and get it sticky with resin in the process). But it leaves less room for mishaps and can be easier to use. Besides, the plant itself will grind more uniformly.
There are three crucial features to keep in mind when looking for a good electric grinder: its energy source, its storage capacity, and its shape. Below, you’ll find nine grinders that are all great, but that are also all tailored to a slightly different need. Pens are more subtle, rechargeable batteries ensure longevity, more expensive grinders have smarter blades, larger storage chambers keep you supplied for more sessions, and so on. But once you pick one, smoking, vaping, or otherwise ingesting plants becomes all the more enjoyable.
A plants grinder is a tool designed to break down dried plants flower into smaller pieces, making it easier and smoother to smoke or vape.
Most plants grinders work by tearing apart plants between two sets of offset teeth in a small chamber. As you twist the grinder back and forth, the teeth crush and crumble the larger flower into finely ground pieces that fall into a collection chamber.
How much is a grinder for plants? Typically prices for plants grinders start around $5 for the most basic plastic designs. A metal grinder with specialized features costs between $40 to $100. Automatic grinders are the most expensive, usually well over $100.
What makes a good plants grinder? No matter the design or additional components, a good plantsgrinder should tick the following boxes:
Turn sticky flower into a fluffy, consistent, and crumbly final product with minimal effort
Designed with durable, long-lasting materials
Easy to clean with basic cleaning tools

Tip #1: More Chambers, More Options
A standard two-chamber grinder will get the job done, but your options become endless once you upgrade to one that has a kief catcher and additional chambers. A friend described adding “middle plants” — plant that’s not kief but more fine than what typically get used — to a Volcano to get a more flavorful high. Mess around with different combinations of consistencies to get different highs.
Tip #2: Look for the Teeth
The teeth shape, and the number of teeth, affect how the plants is broken up. However, more teeth doesn’t necessarily mean better (you don’t want plant that’s too fine right off the bat), and not enough teeth equals chunky plants and more time grinding.
Tip #3: Material Matters
There are three kinds of metals typically used to make grinders: zinc, aluminum and stainless steel. There are plastic grinders on the market, but you might encounter a broken tooth if you’re grinding tough plants. Additionally, cheaper grinders might be coated with paint or a finish, which could chip off and get into your plants. You definitely don’t want to inhale that!
Tip #4 Grip Is Important
The better grip a grinder has, the easier it’s going to be to use. And, an easier grip means you have to use less torque (the measure of force that causes an object to rotate around an axis) to grind the plants. That’s important if you’re a user who experiences a lot of hand pain.
Tip #5 Don’t be Afraid to Splurge
Grinders get a lot of use. A cheaper grinder might not last you as long as something made of high-quality metal. Paying more gives you the peace of mind that a tooth won’t break, the product won’t flake, and that nothing funky from the grinder is getting into your plants.
Your herb grinder will need to be cleaned every so often to keep it working efficiently, otherwise the sides will get clogged up and it will stick when you try to twist it. Most of the issue comes from compacted bits of plants and the bits of resin that inevitably end up covering the surface, and if you’ve ever skipped your regular herb grinder cleaning session, you’ll know how hard it can be to remove. But there are still a few things you can do to get it back in good working condition.
Clear any debris you can. First off, you don’t want to waste your bud, so disassemble the herb grinder and get anything you can out of it. A little tool like a toothpick or a small brush can really help here if you want to get the most out of it.
(Optional) Freeze the grinder before clearing. If you want to do a deeper clean, you can try putting your grinder in the freezer for half an hour or more before you try scraping more debris free. This helps the material clump together and makes the cleaning process easier. As above, a toothbrush or soft brush helps you get more material free. It’s worth taking more time over the scrubbing if you’ve gone through this step — be thorough and get as much kief and compacted plants as you can.
Soak it in isopropyl alcohol. Put the pieces of the grinder in a container like a zip-lock bag or a jar and submerge it in isopropyl alcohol. This will help free up all the pieces stuck to the surfaces and make the next stage much easier. The only issue here is that it’s only really a good idea to do this with metal grinders, because plastic and wood would both be damaged by the process.
Scrub it. Remove the grinder from the alcohol and scrub the pieces thoroughly with a firm-bristled toothbrush. You need to be sure to get right in all the spaces around the edges and between the teeth, and cover each chamber in the process too.
Rinse the grinder and dry it. Your plants grinder should be looking pretty good now, so you can just rinse it under warm water and either dry it with a towel or leave it to dry. Make sure to thoroughly rinse it to remove any alcohol leftover. When it’s dry it’s ready to use again.
Each and every grinder on this list comes with a few features every stoner will love. Not only are each of them made in the United States, their patented designs are exceptionally durable and sturdy compared to the rest of the grinders out there.
