How many grow lights do I need to grow plants?

First, let’s see some key terminology that you’ll encounter when researching grow lights. I’ll introduce the concept of color spectrum, light intensity.
These things are not essential to every grower but are the core of why and how grow lights work. Knowing this you’ll be able to tell the differences between various types and models and grow your plants more effectively.
Well, sunlight has all the different colors of the rainbow merged into one. When this happens, the light becomes white in appearance.
So, where does color spectrum come into play?
Electromagnetic-spectrum simply put, it is a visual display of all these different colors within the sunlight. If you looked at a color spectrum, it would resemble a rainbow.
We humans see light in wavelengths from 380 to 680 nm, while plants’ sensitivity to light ranges from 300 to 800 nm.
What we know as ‘blue’ can have a wavelength between 420 and 460. It looks the same to us, but they have different properties.
When you use grow lights, they will use a custom color spectrum, with values in between this ranges, to help plants grow and flower more efficiently.
Color spectrum for plants that is the best color spectrum to use when growing plants? Or, does this even exist?
There is no ‘one ring to rule them all’ with the color spectrum. All colors are needed, but some are a lot more than others.
Plants respond well to both blue light and yellow/red light. Blue light is at the lower end of the spectrum and we see it as very bright and direct lighting. Yellow/red light is much warmer in our eyes.
Let’s take a step outside into the world of outdoor plants growing for a second, and take a look at the spectrum of the sun throughout the year.
The blue light will be most prominent during the summer months as the sun is high and very bright in the sky. Your plants will grow stronger while using grow lights with a higher ratio of blue light.
Blue ranges from 400–500 nm, the ideal value would be 460 nm.
The warmer light is seen later in the year when the sun drops lower in the sky and isn’t as bright. A plant notices this as a sign to start flowering, therefor grow lights with higher amounts of red are best for the flowering stage.
Red ranges from 620 to 780 nm, with the ideal being 660 nm.

If you’ve yet to build your grow space, that’s cool. But in case you already have one, then a high temperature might be troubling you badly. So, before proceeding further, take a look at the most possible reasons for it-
Take a look at the outdoor garden or the local park. What’re the other things that mother nature is providing them apart from the sunlight? You’re right, it’s the natural air flow. Which is termed as Ventilation in case of indoor growing. Lack of proper ventilation comes with several discomforts for the plants. And a higher temperature is the #1 of them.
Lights are the greatest heat source in a grow room. But there are items that emit heat that circulates around the space. Examples- Light Ballasts, Large Pumps, etc.
I’ve been a grower for past 2 years. And from the very beginning, I grew plants in my basement. Growing in such an insulated area helped me to get at least 5°F less temperature than the same setup planted anywhere in the house.
And when the plants get overheated from one or many of these reasons, that begin to show signs of stress. Which results in a low yield of flower or fruit. Go through the next sections of the article, if you’ve to know some real-time ways to beat the heat in your grow space
It seems like the majority of indoor gardeners struggle with high temperature, so let’s look at ways you can decrease your temperature.
If high temperatures are wrecking your indoor garden, there is no better way to quickly bring the temperature down than an air conditioner. You can easily place them either in the marijuana grow tent or some models allow you to have them outside the tent while ducting the cool air in.

Many hydroponic setups keep the reservoir outside of the tent as dangerous algae can grow in the water when the temperature rises above 70 degrees. However, if you’re using a Deep Water Culture (DWC) system then this means your plants’ roots are directly sitting in the reservoir, so it will be in the tent. Reservoir chillers are crucial in DWC and other hydro setups.
They give you some of the best looking, highest yielding, and tastiest plants, but everyone agrees that their one big downfall is the heat they generate. If you’re using HID grow light like high pressure sodium or metal halide bulbs, you need to prepare for ways to decrease temperatures.

Most LED users fight will low temperatures during propagation and early veg, as LEDs have to be hung at least far from the plant’s canopy as HIDs. The biggest reason is LEDs produce light in a 120-degree angle directly hitting your canopy unlike the 360-degree angle HIDs and fluorescents which has to be redirected affecting its efficiency. These days all good grow rooms and indoor gardeners have hygrometers, but to get a true indication, the more the merrier. Try to have a minimum of three, one up high, one in the middle and one lower down. This will help you to identify cold spikes or heat pockets etc
Some growers prefer lots of little clip fans some like stand fans others have wall mounting or floor fans. Again the more the merrier but diversity is key. For example try to alternate different fans blowing alternately as the wind outside never blows the same way for too long. If possible try to create a vortex of sort by having a fan in each corner, each one face the other helping to create a circulating vacuum of air.
Another strong catalyst behind your grow room’s temperature is a low level of humidity. As you know, low humidity causes a rise in temperature. And vice versa.
To beat with a high temperature, increase the relative humidity of the grow space. That will help plants to do exhale water vapor through leaves, resulting in coolness.

When you adjust the light spectrum, you signal a change in season. Your crop responds accordingly, budding and flowering at a faster pace. The result is higher yields per harvest cycle and more harvest cycles per year.
All you have to do to find an equivalent LED grow light to replace your HID is find an LED with the same PAR (PPFD) reading.
Now if you're not sure what PAR is or how to find it, don't panic. We'll be walking you through what it is and how to find it so you can definitively find the best LED to replace your HPS/MH setup.
But first, we think it's best to clear the air and clear up a big misconception: you can use wattage and/or lumens to determine what sort of LED can replace an HPS/MH grow light.
Alright, let's get down to business: let's find the correct LED grow light to replace your HPS/MH grow light system.
It's a simple job that starts with one tool: a light meter. If you don't have one, we sugguest purchasing a meter just like the one in our How to Measure PAR article (don't worry, you can find them pretty cheap).
Once you've got your meter, here's what you do:
Turn on your HID light and let it completely warm up.
Center the probe of the meter in the middle of your growing area. Be sure your light's as high above the meter as it is above your plants. *Note: This measurement works best with no plants in the growing area.
Here's where it gets a little tricky: PAR for an LED needs to be at the optimal height for your plants. If it has the right PAR but it can't be used at the right height, your plants won't grow.
For example, say you need a light that gives you around 600-900 PPDF. You have two choices:
The ECO Farm ECOZ 510W LED Grow light(power draw of 500w) that has 930 PPFD at 24" above your plants, and 657 PPFD at 36" above your plants.
The ECO Farm ECOT 480WLED Grow Light (power draw of 480w) that has 1062 PPFD at 24" above your plants, and 609 PPFD at 36" above your plants.
In this example, these two product would be the best choice for your grow room. The average height to hang an LED over plants is 24-30", and if you needed some more, moving this light down to 24" would be both safe and effective.

It’s easy and doesn’t require any extra setup.

To top a cannabis plant all you need to do is remove the growth tip and it will split into two more.
You can split two into four, four into eight and so on.

In case you didn’t know, the intensity of light from a source is inversely proportional to the square distance from the source (This is known as the Inverse-square Law of Light).
LST takes full advantage of this by slowly moving the top of the plant out of the bottoms way so it can receive more light.
More light = more bud.
You need to take your time training your plant to grow laterally, or in a circle around the pot, if you go too fast you can put too much stress on the plant.
To train it, use string or wire tied around plant branches and the planter to keep pressure on the branch while moving it where you want it to go.
It’s not as simple as purchasing as many of the most powerful grow lamps you can get your hands on. Every grow space is different. But two factors always need to be tightly controlled and constantly monitored. Temperature and relative humidity (RH) are the key environmental conditions the indoor grower regulates. You need the right tools. Invest in intake fans, extractor fans, and if available, air-con or heating.
HID — HIGH INTENSITY DISCHARGE
HID lamps are a great source of illumination for the grow room and still favoured by most professionals. Unfortunately, MH and HPS lamps run hot and will significantly increase your power bills, too. One 400–600W bulb per m² is a good rule of thumb. Although, you may need to scale down to a 250W bulb. Consider improving side reflection with Mylar sheeting if you can’t keep temperature and RH dialled-in. Using high-powered old-school lighting necessitates the use of more powerful fans and possibly air-con, or else the grow-op may run too hot.
LED — LIGHT EMITTING DIODE
Modern LED grow lights run much cooler and more efficiently than HID. The main drawback with next-gen LED is the substantial investment required for a decent high-quality kit. Over the long-term, you can recoup with the savings you make on the power bill. Choose your LED kit carefully as not all LED’s are created equal. At present, 3W diodes and COB appear to be the most promising technologies. Less heat and more usable light per watt can also save you some money when it comes to selecting fans to regulate airflow.
CFL — COMPACT FLUORESCENT LIGHT
CFL can only take you so far. Sure, they are economic and efficient, but only to a point. In this writer’s opinion, cool white CFL is fine for vegetative growth and rooting clones, but nothing more. Using CFL’s alone for the bloom phase is not recommended. However, adding CFL as a supplement to HPS during bloom can be a winning combination.

What Is Hydroponic Cannabis?
The common nickname for cannabis — “weed” — comes from its ability to grow almost anywhere, under varying conditions and different climates. “Hydroponic cannabis” simply refers to plants grown using a nutrient-water solution and an inert growing medium rather than nutrient-rich soil. This method could be something as basic as hand-watering pots of inert medium with a nutrient solution. As discussed in the first part of this series, sophisticated systems with multiple pumps, timers, and reservoirs can take some of the daily labor out of growing, but they require more maintenance and setup time as well as a greater initial investment.
Cannabis growers have been using different hydroponic methods for many years as a way to maximize yields and speed up growth, the two main advantages of soilless growing. Working with soils indoors can be inefficient and difficult for a number of reasons:
With some hydroponic methods, you get to use small amounts of grow media that can often be reused while also precisely controlling what nutrients the plants are receiving and pH levels. With such levels of control, growers find that their buds are bigger, healthier and more potent.
Whether you have grown cannabis before or have no experience growing cannabis whatsoever, hydroponics can be a great way to produce cannabis in any size space. At first it can be confusing and slightly overwhelming, but by learning the basics you will come to understand it’s not as difficult as you imagined.

CHOOSE A GROWING MEDIUM TO GET THINGS STARTED
Now that we have covered the history and benefits of hydroponic growing, it’s time to get things started. To begin, you’ll need to select a growing medium — a substance that will hold in place the intersection of the stem and roots. From this location, the roots will grow down into the water in search of nutrients. The inert medium also allows good air access to the top of the roots. There is a huge list of different media used by cultivators, with those below being the most common. Each medium has its own unique benefits, and some work better with different systems. CLAY PEBBLES
As one of the most popular options, clay pebbles are excellent at aerating root systems. Clay pebbles sometimes require that growers alter the pH in order to provide an optimal growing environment, however, pre-altered pebbles can be purchased. You’ll need to place clay pebbles into a plastic hydroponic basket that has spaces for roots to grow through.
ROCKWOOL
Rockwool is another popular choice, and is a substance created using volcanic rocks with a wool texture, hence the name. Rockwool has a tremendous capacity to retain water, which allows for good hydration of the upper root system. Rockwool can be placed within a hydroponic basket, but can also be lodged directly into the top of a bucket or tank lid without.
PERLITE
Perlite is a volcanic glass that expands when exposed to high temperatures. It’s often used in garden soils to provide aeration, which is exactly why it’s beneficial to use as a hydroponic growing medium for cannabis.
COCO COIR
Coco coir is a good sustainable option for a growing medium. As the fibre from coconuts, coco coir allows for good aeration and moisture retention. Coconut fibres are also known to protect roots from infection due to the presence of plant-stimulating hormones.
Choosing Your Hydroponic Garden System
Aeroponics — This method of hydroponics goes without a growing medium, although a small amount may be used to germinate the seed or root a cutting. Plant roots are suspended mid-air inside a chamber kept at a 100% humidity level and fed with a fine spray of nutrient solution. This mid-air feeding allows the roots to absorb much needed oxygen, thereby increasing metabolism and rate of growth reportedly up to 10 times of that in soil and there is nearly no water loss due to evaporation. The mist is created by special nozzles to the root system on a regular basis. The roots are held inside a water proof and light proof container which helps create a high humidity area.
Continuous flow / Top feed system — This is the system you often see pictures of. Using a 2″ or 4″ PVC tube with holes cut into the top at regular intervals for the plants to sit in a holder or pot. The nutrients are continuously fed down the PVC pipe over the root system.
Deep Water Culture (DWC) + Recirculating direct water culture systems (also known as RDWC) + BubblePonics — This is a simple yet effective way to grow, it is similar to the mist Aeroponics system in some ways. However the concept is to submerge the plants roots in the nutrient system, now without air they would die, so you add an air rock like used fish tanks. If you pump significant air through the system the bubbles maintain oxygen to the roots and they grow really well.
Drip Irrigation — A great way to save water and nutes. Used throughout large outdoor farming systems to cut down on waste, small droppers are placed right next to the stem or roots of the marijuana in their pots within the medium. Small drops of the nutrient system will drip out regularly to feed the plant. Very low evaporation and good for stealth grows too because it is silent.
Ebb and Flow — As discussed above the nutrient solution floods a tray situated above the reservoir and then ebbs back into the reservoir in the process feeding the plants with their roots situated to the tray.
Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) — Similar to the Ebb and Flow technique but it is more circular. The tray above the reservoir is tilted and the nutrients fed in from the top and let to drain in a thin film down the tray back into the reservoir, it lets roots feed and have access to air.
SELECTING A STRAIN FOR HYDROPONIC GROWING
Strain selection is an important factor of hydroponic growing. Plants grown within these systems are free to uptake nutrients extremely fast, which often results in explosive and rapid growth. For this reason, selecting a large, towering sativa variety won’t be your best choice, especially if your system resides within an indoor grow tent.
Smaller and more compact strains are ideal for indoor hydroponic systems. Beginning with a smaller strain is advantageous for several reasons. For one, it will let you cultivate several plants within a smaller space, allowing for more diversity and potentially bigger yields. Additionally, if your plants do go through a growth spurt, you’ll have room to deal with such sudden surges in height.
Below are two strains that we recommend for hydroponic growing.
WHITE WIDOW
White Widow is a perfectly balanced hybrid strain that features 50% indica genetics and 50% sativa genetics. She was created using parent strain White Widow S1, and provides a well-balanced high that stimulates and excites the mind whilst relaxing and stoning the body. A THC level of 19% ensures a powerful psychoactive experience that lasts several hours. These flowers contain a terpene profile that emanates grounding tastes and smells of earth and pine.

Each hit of this strain is infused with tastes of sweetness complemented by notes of citrus.
Expect indoor plants to reach a stealthy height of 40–70cm, produce yields of up to 200g/m², and run from seed to harvest in as little as 8 weeks.
Set Up Your Hydroponic Cannabis Growing System
There are numerous setups for growing hydroponically with varying benefits that were discussed previously here. And while there are several types of hydroponic setups that don’t use any type of growing medium at all, many of them still use some sort of substrate to support root growth.
Various materials all provide slightly different benefits and drawbacks, so some thought should be put into choosing the right medium for your cannabis plants. In this article, we are going to be utilizing the drip line hydroponics technique.
While this system is built from the ground up, it should be noted that there are plenty of plug and play systems available for those looking for something that is easy to set up. Plug and play systems come with everything you need in a streamlined package to allow growers to get started on the right foot.
First we will start with the supplies needed. Keep in mind this is just an example, and depending on your space and desired results, many things can be tweaked in a hydroponic system to make it most beneficial to you. This list specifically outlines equipment needed to install your hydroponic system and does not include lights, fans, filters, and other basic needs for any hydroponic grow tents.
Hydroponic Cannabis Supplies:
3 or 5 gallon bucket (one for each plant)
Grow table
Clay pellets (enough to fill each bucket)
Rockwool cubes (one 1.5-inch starter plug per plant)
Reservoir tank (depending on the size of garden)
Water pump (the bigger the better)
Air pump
Air stone
Plastic tubing
Drip line
Drip line emitters (one or two per plant)
Nutrients for Hydroponic Cannabis
Marijuana plants, and in fact all plants, do not need to be in a living soil, they require nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and sulfur (S). Those are the macroelements (the big ones) and the small elements known as microelements are iron (Fe), chlorine (Cl), manganese (Mn), boron (B), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) and molybdenum (Mo). Growing marijuana indoors with hydroponics, water is enriched with these very same nutrient salts, creating a hydroponic nutrient solution which is perfectly balanced. An all purpose hydroponic nutrient solution with secondary elements like calcium, sulphur and magnesium and trace elements boron, copper, molybdenum, zinc, iron, and manganese will get you through all stages of growth. But depending on the stage of growth, you can adjust different nutrient levels needed at different times to optimize your yield. A 15–15–15 solution contains 15% Nitrogen; 15% Phosphorus; 15% Potassium. A 20–10–5 solution contains 20% Nitrogen; 10% Phosphorus; 5% Potassium. The percentage of the solution not used by N-P-K is trace elements and inert material. If you are buying hydroponic nutrients, get the powder kind that mixes with water. It is much cheaper over the long run when compared to pre-mixed solutions.
N = Nitrogen
P = Phosphorus
K = Potassium
Higher amounts of N are needed when the temperature will be below 80 degrees in the grow room during vegetative growth. 20–20–20, or 23–19–17, or 12–6–6, or something similar, with trace elements should do it.
If temperatures are higher than 80 degrees in the grow room, you need not worry about more N in the formula during vegetative growth.
During flowering the plant needs lots of P, regardless of temperature. 15–30–15, or 5–20–10, or 2–4–3, or something similar, with trace elements should do it.
Do not over fertilize your plants as too much fertilizer will kill your plants. If you under fertilize, plants will take longer to grow but will not die. Follow the mixing instructions on your hydroponic solution package, if you aren’t sure, use less rather than more.
As water evaporates it is absorbed by the plants, your water reservoir level will drop. Add tap water that has been aged 3 days or longer to the reservoir. I don’t add nutrient solution when I top up the tank, some people do.
Change the nutrient solution every 2 weeks. That is, discard the old solution and clean out the reservoir, pumps, and other equipment that is used with HOT WATER. After cleaning, add tap water that has been aged 3 days or longer to the reservoir then add nutrient solution. You only need to clean the cups and tubing the plants are in before you start a new crop. More detail on nutrients.
How to germinate the seeds?
If you are considering to grow hydroponics weeds on a large-scale basis, you will need to set up a garden inside a grow room. You can usually purchase the marijuana seeds online. The price of these seeds typically varies depending on the strain you choose. Thus, you will require to be very careful with the strain. You should set up the hydroponics garden and check if everything is working. You can then take your next step of hydroponics weed growing for beginners by germinating the seeds. If you have bought clones instead of seeds, you should not consider sprouting them.
There are a lot of mediums available in the market for the growth of the plant. Since you’re not using the soil, you will be in utter need of the medium as the substitute. One of the most used media include Rockwool. Although it does not offer nutrition, it can be a great support.
Place the seed in the midst of the nutrient solution and then submerge about 70% of the cube in water. Allow it to settle and germinate. If you notice growth in the seeds, you can take it out with the roots facing downwards, and place it in the nutrient medium to ensure growth.
Grow lighting for Cannabis Hydroponics
Since modern hydroponics began people have used high intensity discharge HID lights including Metal Halide (MH) or High Pressure Sodium (HPS) to grow marijuana and more recently with great success, LED grow lights. Metal halide light is close to regular room light or compact fluorescent light CFL and is more abundant in the blue and green spectrum’s which is best for vegetative growth. While high pressure sodium HPS offer light in the orange, amber and red end of the spectrum which is best for flowering stage (later) growth. Growers often use these two lights in tandem, MH for vegging and HPS for flowering or both at the same time. Marijuana grows well from 420 through 730 nanometres which can be covered in this method. HID lamps like the MH and HPS offer a lot of light but just as much wasted energy is emitted as heat. You will need to manage that heat with a good ventilation system. HIDs also require a ballast to operate so make sure you buy one of them. Expect to pay about $250 for a 600W HPS/MH digital ballast, bulb and reflector combo.
Full spectrum LED grow lights are what the pros have turned too now, we know some of the large greenhouses (think big name seed companies) in the Netherlands have turned too as they offer far more control, lower electricity costs while heat and space issues are decreased. Why are LEDs now a good option? The cost of LEDs, their power and the color they produce (spectrum) is tuned perfectly for marijuana growing. LED grow lights, in particular full spectrum LED grow lights, number of advantages over HIDs such as covering the full grow spectrum from seedling, vegetative and flowering stages, run on approximately half the electricity and have bulb lives of around 50,000 to 60,000 hours! A 1000W HPS is the equivalent to approximately 500W LED (true draw). Good LEDs run cool, have no fans or excellent silent fans and emit very little heat — and do not require a ballast. So you need to have a go at setting up your own indoor grow room, but you don’t have quite a bit of financial support? You’ve checked out the web and it feels like you have to burn through hundreds or thousands to get up and going? It appears to be extremely difficult to contribute so much cash?

During the vegetative phase, most growers give plants 18 hours of lighting. Once ready, switching the light cycle 12 hours on, 12 hours off, triggers the flowering stage. During this time and throughout the bloom stage, lights reaching plants because of an improperly sealed grow room can cause confusion and stress. It might disrupt the flowering process and worse, could turn female plants into hermaphrodites.
The home medicinal plants grow room is usually a spare room in the house. Windows, of course, is the source of unwanted light leaks. Some people try to cover it with fabric. However, what it does is to dampen the amount of light entering the room. As an option, one could cover it with cardboard entirely. Be sure to use lightproof tape to seal the edges to ensure there is absolutely no light penetrating seeping in.
Another possible source of light leak is the door. If that is the case, usually it is at the bottom where there is a gap between the door itself and the floor. One thing a grower can do is to cover the bottom with fabric after leaving the room and closing the door.
As all green plants use light, water and CO2 to produce sugar through photosynthesis. Likewise, medicinal plant uses all three above vital elements to produce sugar and oxygen. Commonly, the amount of carbon dioxide can be up to 350ppm in any closed space but this can be consumed very easily if the plant is in any closed space like a grow room . Furthermore, not having adequate approach to Carbon dioxide can decline the growth of plant.
To overcome this short coming, you can use a CO2 tank with a controller/regulator but you can also use a small ventilation system to refresh air of inner environment or grow room of your medicinal plants garden. Firstly, you need to place a fan in front of the air inlet and create a hole where air can escape.

When it comes to the light distribution, As we know plant needs 12 to 18 hours of light during the Vegetative stage and Flowering Phase. Heating should be consistent between 64°C and 84°C. It means that Temperature should not cool down under 64°C and should not exceed more than 84°C.
We have seen the extractor aspect which requires to run for a whole night to maintain Temperature. You need to Create a ventilation portion in the grow room. More heat and More coldness affect medicinal plants.
Light is a necessity. Without it, plants cannot grow. The cheapest option is to use CFL. However, it is not the ideal grow light for plants. Still, many people have successfully grown medicinal plants using this light source.
A better grow light system would be High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps. On the plus side, they are powerful lamps that can provide optimal light for the plants. However, they are costly not only in its purchase price but also heavy on the electricity bill.
Fortunately, full spectrum LED grow lights have become mainstream. As such, they now offer the best value for the money.
Regardless of which type of lighting one prefers, it is a needed investment in order to cultivate medicinal plants.
Depending on the size of the grow room, having a reflective wall surface may or may not be beneficial. For example, place a few plants in the center of a large room, having reflective walls will not matter as much. But in a smaller area, it becomes useful in reflecting enough light back to the plants to make a difference.
Of course, the best way to have a reflective wall is to cover it with reflective sheets. It is not that expensive at all and easy to install. As an option, one can also opt to paint the wall with flat white latex.
