Light intensity

Red light is ideal for flowering and fruit set.
Light intensity is the brightness of light. The amount of light produced by a bulb is measured in a variety of ways and, unfortunately, two different bulbs may report their light output using different measurements, making it hard to compare. The distance between a light source and a plant impacts the light intensity.

While there are many ways to measure light, a few common measurements you are likely to see include:

PPF (photosynthetic photon flux) is a measure of how much plant-usable light is released by a bulb per second and is measured in micromoles of light per meter per second (umol m-2s-1). You may also see PPFD (photosynthetic photon flux density), which is a measure of PPF as it reaches a surface like a plant leaf. PPFD goes down as your plants get further away from the light source.

Lumens are less relevant when considering lighting for plants. Lumens measure how bright the light is to the human eye, and do not measure some of the important wavelengths that plants need to grow.

Watts are a measure of the amount of energy needed to produce light, rather than a measure of the actual intensity of the light. Light bulbs should report both watts and another measure of light intensity such as PPF, lumens or foot candles. A more efficient lightbulb will produce more light with fewer watts of energy.

Distance from light source
Keeping sufficient distance between plants and a light source is especially important when using bulbs that produce a lot of heat, like incandescent and high-pressure sodium. But even with LED and fluorescent lights, maintaining a proper distance helps to ensure healthy plant growth.

Seedlings: 4–6 inches (move your light up regularly as they grow)

Light quality
Light quality refers to the wavelength or color of light. The light spectrum is composed of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet light. Sunlight provides all colors of light.

The part of the light spectrum that plants use is called Photosynthetically Active Radiation, which is composed of primarily red and blue light.

As lighting technologies have become more efficient, grow lights that only emit light from the red and blue wavelengths of the light spectrum have become more common.

Blue light or mixed light bulbs are suitable for starting seeds and leafy greens, as well as non-flowering house plants.

Seedlings: 16–18 hours per day
Hydroponic lettuce and herbs: 12–14 hours per day
Foliage houseplants: 12–14 hours
Flowering houseplants: 14–16 hours

“I expect to find that in agricultural situations or growing rooms,” Sundling said. “If people are trying to grow crops at home, they might look at that type of stuff. What I’m geared more towards is houseplants which don’t need quite as much light as a production facility.”

Meanwhile, when comparing LED and CFL lights, Sundling said that the biggest difference is that usually the fluorescent has a narrower spectrum of light.

“The LED is a broader range of nutrients,” Sundling said. “However, fluorescent lighting can provide light to a large amount of space, more so than the LED generally. They have been found to have energy efficiency, but not as much as the LED.”

Check the spectrum
When choosing lights, you also want to make sure that your light has the right spectrum or color of light. The light that plants get from the sun is a full spectrum of colors, but many lights that we use indoors have a limited spectrum.

Sundling said to look at the box. Metrics like “lumens” and “watts” are not all that helpful to choosing lights — the former is a measure of brightness but not necessarily effectiveness, and the latter is a measure of power consumption — but what you want to look out for is the color “temperature” of a light. This indicates the kind of light it will produce, measured in Kelvin, designated by “K,” on a scale from 1,000 to 10,000. Cooler colors have a higher K value; warmer colors have a lower value.

You want to choose a grow light labeled as “full spectrum,” but the range of color temperature that is best for your plants will depend on your goals, according to Johnny’s Selected Seeds. “In my opinion, houseplants are less specific than if you were trying to grow flowers or veggies, as those need much more care when it comes to indoor gardening,” Longfellow said. “A simple grow light can be all one needs for maintaining houseplants indoors through the winter. Some plants will benefit more from red or blue lights, while others can benefit under regular white lights. There is a big difference between what one needs for edible plants, versus houseplants.”

There is a wide range of costs when it comes to grow lights depending on which features you choose.

“Some of the smaller ones can be in the $20 range, and larger ones in the hundreds,” Sundling said. “It all depends what sizes and technologies you are looking for. Shopping around is the best way to find one that works for you when it comes to saving money.”

No matter what your budget, though, Sundling said that almost any light is better than doing nothing at all if you want your plants to survive the Maine winter.

“Something is always better than nothing,” Sundling said. “If you’re wondering if your plant will benefit from adding extra light in the winter in Maine, it definitely will.”

Outdoors, red light is most plentiful during summertime. When plants sense more red light using a special light receptor, they release a hormone that keeps chlorophyll from breaking down. For this reason, red light yields large, healthy plants, since chlorophyll is converting plenty of light into cellulose. Additionally, red light is needed to grow flowers and seeds/fruits. While red light is more prevalent in spring and summer, higher levels of blue light occur during fall and winter. The plant’s blue light receptor triggers a hormone response that slows down stem and leaf growth when it senses higher levels of blue light. For this reason, the initial reaction is to use no blue grow lights, but having some blue is important. The same blue-light hormone controls ‘apical dominance in plants, which is the reason a plant’s main stem is larger than any side stems. It’s common to see plants with more exposure to blue light yield a short and bushy plant with a more complex stem structure. Too much blue light, however, will result in stunted plants.

Most indoor growers recommend getting the best of both worlds using a 5:1 ratio of red to blue light. The high level of red light keeps plants in their prime growing mode while the small amount of blue encourages stem growth.

Power
Measuring the intensity of light is complicated–there are at least half a dozen units of measurement, all meaning different things.

Watts, for example, are a measure of power that everyone is likely most familiar with. Yet, when it comes to the physics of growing plants, it’s more or less a useless measurement. That is because watts describe how much power a light source consumes, not what it emits. So, while it’s helpful to know the wattage of a grow light, the measurement has little to do with the plants themselves.

If you hear talk of lumens, you’re getting closer to understanding the power of a grow light. A lumen measures light based on how humans perceive it. We have what’s called “photopic vision”, which is our vision and colour perception in well-lit conditions. PAR light is all the visible wavelengths of light that cause photosynthesis, found within the 400–700 nanometer range. PPFD is a ‘spot’ measurement that tells you how many photons from the PAR range hit a specific area of your canopy over time. It is expressed as micromoles per square meter per second (μmol/m2/s). For this reason, PPFD is the most accurate measure of light power. First, unlike other measures, it considers the entire spectrum of light that plants see. PPFD also takes into account the amount of light that will actually reach the plant instead of focusing only on the point of origin. A light source can be very bright and powerful, but if it is too away from the plant, or obstructed in some way, the plant won’t be getting all the light it needs for photosynthesis.
