Growing plants at home are becoming increasingly popular around the globe. However, as conventional grow lights, such as HPS and sodium vapor lamps, consume an insane amount of electricity, the focus has shifted onto LED grow lights. Grow LEDs do not only provide the same light intensity at considerably lower energy consumption, they are also designed to illuminate your growing area for much longer time frames and may even come with a much more favorable light spectrum.
LED (light-emitting diode) Grow Light is a kind of energy-efficient artificial light used to enhance the natural growth of indoor plants by providing them an adequate amount of lighting. Most of the LED bulbs produce light waves of Blue and Red color, responsible for the plants’ growth. Red light waves respond to the Phytochromes (responsible for leafy growth), while blue light enhances the photosynthesis process and stimulates stronger roots. Depending upon the plant type, you either require red or blue or both light waves for healthy plant growth.
Unlike other fluorescent bulbs or lights, LED grow lights use two different kinds of semiconductors: Electrons (carry a negative charge) and Holes (have a positive charge) to create their own light spectrum. This light spectrum act as a supplement to natural light and helps plants grow healthier and faster.
While the other bulbs or lights use filament or mercury or lead to produce light, LED grow lights use their semiconductor chips to emit the light spectrum and thus more energy-efficient, eco-friendly & long-lasting.

Plants use a specific light range known as Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) for photosynthesis. The PAR values involve the electromagnetic wavelengths between 400 and 700 nanometers on which different stages of plant growth occur. Grow LED lights produce a ton of lights of different wavelengths but are not absorbed by plants. Plants only absorbed lights of some specific wavelengths, and they reflect rest. So, in simple words, PAR is the light’s amount that is usable to plants.
The effectivity of any Grow LED light depends upon its PAR value. It is measured by the number of micromoles of light per square meter per second. The more intense the PAR value of the LED light, the more effective it will be. So, always check the PAR value of grow light while opting for the right one for your indoor garden.
600–1000 µmol/m²/s: High-strength light. This range is best for developing growth and flowering.
400–600 µmol/m²/s: Medium strength light. Suitable for early veg and stretching.
200–400 µmol/m²/s: Low strength light. Ideal for delicate seedlings and clones.
Just like PAR, PPFD Value also plays a crucial role in determining the efficiency of a grow LED light. PPFD stands for “Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density.”
PPFD is basically the measure of LIght intensity, and it tells how much many light photons that fall within the PAR range hit a given square meter per second (in micromoles). PPFD value doesn’t tell you how much measured light will land on plants, but it is still crucial to determine the efficiency of a particular grow light. The longer will be your light cycle, the lower will be optimal PPFD value and vice-versa.
You will need to consider your budget and spacing need in order to make the best LED grow light comparison. However, you will also need to think about the spectrum, light control, and electrical usage of your lights, too.
There are hundreds of LED grow light manufacturers out there, but what’s most important is that you consider the features of your grow light instead of the brand. You should consider the colors of your LED grow lights. Light intensity is important when your plants are engaging in photosynthesis. Plants can utilize lights at all wavelengths, with blue being the most important as your plant is growing and producing leaves. However, red will be more important during the flowering stage. Your plants will need to experience a change in the color and intensity of light to encourage their natural growth and biological processes.
This is why a good LED light is important. LED lamps contain many individual LEDs, so you can buy one that has both red and blue lights and allows you to adjust between the two throughout the day.
When you consider spectrum, know that you will need a full-spectrum LED grow light to help your plants grow. Although blue and red spectrums are important, so are ultraviolet and infrared spectrums. You need powerful light with multiple different wavelengths in order to get your plants to grow. Although full spectrum yields are new, they are a good option to consider these units run cool and don’t require fans, adding to electrical savings and overall safety. Plus, these lights tend to be more durable.
You should also consider the electrical usage of your LED lights. This ties into the durability and spectrum of your grow lights, but remember that good LED grow lights will need to run for a minimum of ten hours a day. Make sure you understand the total output of the light is — the higher the output, the more powerful the unit is and the less electricity it will use.
Light control is also important. You want to make sure your plants are received the most amount of lighting possible. We have broken this down for you above, but make sure the LED grow light you select is equipped to provide optimal control of these times.
A full-spectrum LED grow light is always the way to go — if your budget allows it.
A full-spectrum LED light will give you higher grain quality and reduce your electricity needs over time. You will need fewer exhaust fans to circulate the temperature because full-spectrum lights run a lot cooler compared to other lights. You also don’t need to replace them for over 50,000 hours, giving you a better life and regular bulbs. Most full-spectrum LED grow lights also offer a minimum of a three-year warranty.
Plants just like humans need some vital things to survive, but getting the best of what you need can only result in better quality. In other words, if you provide plants with the best LED grow lights that cover every aspect of lighting a plant needs then your crop can and will be the best it can be. We hope these top rated grow lights will help your indoor garden.
Every grow room is different and certain aspects of an LED grow light might not be perfect. Consider the variables of your grow room, plant, and soil and you can easily determine which LED grow light is right for you and more specifically your plants.

I am a owner of a Vivosun 6450 6 bar led light, Does anybody know of a place I could exchange this nice light for a upgrade? A higher rates manufacturer? I have a 4×4 tent and this light unit fills the entire area above the grow area. Looking for something a little smaller and stronger. Casey M.🌱
